IB FILM ASSESSMENTS

Here are some power points and other documents about the three assessments!
Independent Study

The independent study is a research paper written in the style of a documentary. You are to pick a film related topic and research two (SL) to four (HL) films that explore that topic. You will use examples from your films/ analyze selections from your films as evidence of your topic.  Again, you write the paper as if you are producing a documentary film. You will be the narrator and you will write it in two column format.

Good Topics are ones like "The Role of Diegetic sound in Romance movies" or "Horror Movies and Editing Tricks that Scare Us!" Stay away from topics that encourage you to spend all your effort on philosophical ideas that are hard to anaylze cinematically.

Oral Presentation

The oral presentation is where you really put your film analysis skills to the test. You will be required to speak for up to 15 minutes, analyzing a five minute selection of a film. Your presentation will be recorded and sent to IB for grading. Your teacher will give you three films from an IB list, and you will choose one of those films to analyze (just a five minute excerpt of the film, like one scene). You will need to thoughtfully analyze the scene through Mise en Scene. You can construct your presentation in any fashion, but you need to include these things:

Director's intent: What was the director trying to achieve through certain shots, lighting, sound? What was their vision or what meaning  was he/she trying to get across to the audience?

Sociocultural Context: What was happening in the world at the time this movie was made that could influence it? Was anything happening in the film industry in terms of styles, trends, technology, etc.

Genre: How does it fit into its genre? What specific examples from the 5 minute excerpt can you point to that symbolize the genre? Can you think of correlations between it and other films from the same genre?

Reason for Selecting the 5 minute Excerpt: Why did you choose this five minutes?

Relationship Between the Excerpt and the Film as a Whole:  How does these five minutes relate cinematically to the rest of the movie? Can you point to other areas in the movie where the Director uses the same music or lighting? Does it foreshadow another moment in the movie? Maybe it is the only flashback within the movie?

Critic/Audience Response (HL2): What was audience and critic response to this movie? Find specific quotes from well known critics or magazine articles.

You will need 4 months at least to properly produce your film. So, there is no time to spare! Here is a generalized schedule for your group to follow. By Christmas you should have production finished and should be handing the film over to the editor and sound designer.

Look Below to find some examples of forms your group should be creating at you start preproduction. It is important for the success of your film to create the preproduction paperwork. Also in your commentary you will be expected to provide examples of these documents.

IB External assessments (50 marks)

Independent study (25 marks)-Students must produce a script for a complete short documentary production exploring an aspect of film theory or film history, based on a study of a minimum of four films (HL) two films (SL) from more than one country. The prime voice of the documentary must clearly be that of the student, who will also act as the narrator, onscreen host and/or voice-over. Students must ensure that any comments or ideas they attribute to celebrities or others, such as experts, are fully supported by detailed references in the annotated list of sources. The independent study must be presented in the form of a written dossier composed of the following three items: Rationale, Script, Annotated list of sources

Length of the rationale: no more than 100 words

Length of the script: (HL) 12-15 pages  (SL) 8-10 pages

Presentation (25 marks)-The student is required to make an oral presentation to the teacher of an analysis of an extract lasting no more than five minutes from a prescribed film. The list of films prescribed by the IB is published each year in the November edition of the Diploma Programme coordinator notes. Teachers choose three films from the prescribed list. These films must not be studied in class. Students should be provided with the names of the three chosen films four weeks in advance of the presentation. Students should select an extract lasting no more than five minutes from their chosen film and offer a detailed textual analysis of the extract, placing it in the context of the film as a whole and in a broader sociocultural context, as appropriate, and including reasons for choosing the particular extract. Students may prepare and take notes into the assessment, but they should not read from a prepared document and any notes should be used for reference and guidance only.

Maximum length of presentation: 15 minutes (HL) 10 minutes (SL)

IB internal assessment (50 marks)

Production portfolio (50 marks)-This component consists of a student’s completed film project and its accompanying documentation. Students may work alone or in production groups containing a maximum of four people. A student may undertake more than one role in a production, and some roles may be carried out by more than one student. Nonetheless, for the purposes of assessment each student must identify their principal role (director, writer, cinematographer, sound designer, editor). Two students from the same group cannot choose to be assessed in the same principal role. The content and treatment of the films made must be appropriate for a young person no older than 15 years of age.

Completed film project with trailer and written documentation encompassing both: no more than 1,750 words.(HL) and 1,200(SL)

Length of the film project: 4-5 (SL) 6–7 minutes (HL) (including titles)

(HL) Length of the trailer: 40–60 seconds (Each HL student must produce their own trailer, working alone and not in collaboration with others, even if they have worked with others in the production of the film.)

Length of individual rationale for the film: no more than 100 words; rationale for the trailer: no more than 100 words
